After a few trips to the climbing gym and developing a nice routine, I decided it was time to purchase my own gear so I didn’t have to spend the extra money on rentals every session.
I’m a newbie, so I really had no idea what I was looking for in shoes. So, my boyfriend took me up to the Mad Rock HQ to try out different shoes and talk to their sales people. My boyfriend has climbed before and was using Mad Rock shoes already, so he got a chance to try out some of the newer models while we were there.
It was worth the trip and talking to the people there to learn more about climbing shoes! I ended up with a pair of Mad Rock Phoenix due to the fit, less aggressive shape, and the ability to lace up my shoes. The latter made me feel a bit more comfortable as a new climber.
While we were there, we picked up Mad Rock harnesses (they were on sale), a portable hangboard, and a couple of carabiners while we were there. Grigris were free to use at our climbing gym, but we did end up purchasing our own a few weeks later.
